森の民の少年ポポは、平和な森に異変が起きた原因を調べるため旅立った父ペレの帰りを待ちわびていた。しかし森の異変は、ポポの母ピアまで変えてしまう。父ならば、母を助ける手がかりが分かるかもしれない。ポポは父に託されたドングリ型のペンダント「守護者の証」を胸に、父を追って旅立つ。 旅の途中、ポポが持つ「守護者の証」を狙って、森の破滅を願うアダーと手下たちが、赤い目の甲虫を操りポポを襲撃するが、そのたびに何処からともなく巨大なカブトムシ「ムシキング」が現れポポを護るのだった。

Darkside Blues (Japanese: ダークサイド・ブルース, Hepburn: Dākusaido Burūsu) is a manga series by Hideyuki Kikuchi. The story has been adapted into an anime film directed by Yoshimichi Furukawa. The film was originally licensed by Central Park Media and then later licensed by ADV Films. The story involves the town of Kabuki-cho, home of a resistance faction called Messiah. In the futuristic setting, Kabuki-cho is one of the last places of freedom because the Persona Century Corporation has taken control of the majority of the Earth. Kabuki-cho is hence known as "The Dark Side of Tokyo". Furthermore, a mysterious stranger called Darkside appears to protect the citizens of Kabuki-cho.
